In Reference to the “Pledge of Allegiance”
Written in 2002 By Tommy
As a soldier, I grew up in Wauchula, FL, and have spent most of my adult life (31 years) serving this wonderful free country of ours. I was mobilized this past April to serve again. I never hesitated. I am currently in Stuttgart, Germany…Headquarters, European Command. However, I am appalled to hear that the “Pledge of Allegiance” is now unconstitutional. What would our forefathers George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln think or do? What would our 692,000 men and women who have given their lives defending our great nation…over the past 228 years…do? Who “in his or her right mind” would even think of such a dastardly deed? In my opinion, this type of infidelity to our nation borders on treason. We are at war defending the privilege of flying “Old Glory” and then someone declares that the “Pledge of Allegiance” is unconstitutional. This is insane! Our soldiers…some under fire daily…What do they think?
When I was in school, I enjoyed standing up and reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance”. It was and still is important to me! We as a nation have allowed “prayer” to be taken out of our schools because it offended a few people. We as a nation have allowed many foolish things over the past few years because we did not want to offend anyone. People who attempt to take away our basic freedoms (freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom to assemble, and freedom of religion) need to be offended.
The British were offended when our forefathers told them that we would no longer be taxed without representation. During World War I and II, many people and hostile countries were offended at Americans because we refused to submit to world tyranny and oppression. North Korea was offended because we would not submit to their dogma of communism. Currently, many terrorists are offended because we will NOT allow them to continue to kill us! Some people in America need to be offended if they insist on taking away our freedoms!
