The United Nations…A Colossal Failure (Part 1)

The United Nations…A Colossal Failure (Part 1)
By Tommy Franks

Bottomline Upfront: The UN should be thrown out of our country!

Let me say this…This article is not a thesis or dissertation on the UN. These are my challenging thoughts and point of view. You may agree or disagree. Regardless, this article will give you some “food” for thought! That’s what makes America such a great nation!

In June of 1945, the United Nations Charter was drawn up by the representatives of 50 countries at San Francisco. In December, 1946 (the year I was born), the UN decided to locate on the East River of New York City. The General Assembly accepted a gift of $8.5 million from the visionary, John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and bought a tract of land for the General Assembly and the Conference Building.

Fifty years have come and gone and the United Nations has had almost nil success in any type of peace keeping…even though they are experts in “observing”. They see, but do nothing! They talk and blow smoke, but take no action. The UN has become a colossal failure! Originally, the UN had such lofty and supercilious ideas. They have even attempted to create a World Government. They should have gone the way of the defunct League of Nations, but so far they have managed to survive and even deceive the American people. Read on and you will see an incredible charade and sham!

The Preamble of the United Nations says, “We the peoples of the United Nations are determined:
· to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
· to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
· to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
· to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom, and for these ends
· to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors, and
· to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and
· to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and
· to employ international machinery for the promotion of economic and social advancement of all peoples,
· Have resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims.”

Fact: The above overture is pure poppycock! Since December 1946, the UN has failed to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war” over 60 times. Wars have been fought all over the globe…with the participants mostly members of the UN. Those wars were neither prevented nor curtailed. It seems that the UN only observes. They observe thugs, thieves, goons, hotheads, and terrorists raping women and killing innocent people…even entire families. They have observed dozens of nations being violently overthrown… sometimes by way of machetes or machine guns or tanks. They have observed thousands of people being killed. They have observed economies being wrecked. They have observed the invalidation of fundamental human rights. They have observed good people being brutally and savagely violated thousands of times in virtually every nation on Planet Earth. UN personnel have become experts on being “observers”. Anybody out there? Anybody care? We should! It’s our money (mostly) that is financing these clowns and incompetent individuals.

From the beginning, the UN has shown that it is a timid, worthless, hollow paper tiger. They are ineffective, weak, and incompetent. They have neither the will nor the power to implement any significant goals or visions. Basically, they have no vision… except perhaps to spend money that does not belong to them.

The nickname of the UN is “The Disunited Nations”. The UN has continuously sought out people from small, powerless, non-aligned nations to become its Secretary General.
It’s almost like a large corporation going to the most desolate island in the world…cut off from main stream society…and selecting their next CEO?

Where was the UN when the British sent tanks to Greece to prevent a Soviet push to the Mediterranean? Where was the UN when the Soviets initiated a blockade on Berlin? And what about the Bolivian Popular Revolt in 1946…the Haitian military coup…The Huk Rebellion in the Philippines…the French Indo-China War…the Korean Occupation Rebellion…the Portuguese Military Coup…when Pakistan annexed Kalat…when India annexed Junagadh…revolt in Madagascar…when six Arab armies attacked Israel in 1948…the Costa Rican Civil war…the Korean War…the Argentine Revolt in 1951…the Bolivian Military Coup., etc, etc.

And this was under the first UN Secretary…Mr. Trygve Lie.

Then enters Dag Hammarskjold from Sweden as the new elected Secretary General.
He was there from 1953 to 1961. Under his watch, the following occurred:

Great British intervened in Guyana in 1953…the Columbian military coup occurred... the East German Uprising took place…the Laotian Rebellion & the Moroccan Rebellion…an Iranian military coup occurred…the Algerian War of Independence took place (lasting from 1954 until 1962)…the Batdambang Massacre…the Guatemalan Revolution…the Tibetan Uprising in 1954…along with the Viet Minh Incursion in Cambodia…a Buddhist Rebellion in South Vietnam in 1956… the Sudanese Civil War which lasted until the mid 1990's. The Suez Canal was nationalized by Egypt…the Sinai War broke out in 1956…the Cameroon Rebellion…Castro overthrew the government in Cuba, etc, etc.

All of these events and scores of others (most violent) took place during the tenure of Mr. Dag Hammarskjold of Sweden.

Then came another obscure person from a third world nation, Mr. U Thant of Myanmar. He held office from 1961 to 1971. During his term of office, the Nigerian Civil War occurred as did the Sandinista Insurgency, lasting until 1978. A French army revolt broke out in Algeria. The Gary Powers U-2 Incident occurred…the ill-fated “Bay of Pigs” invasion…the Berlin Wall Crisis… the Laotian Civil War…the Nigerian Civil War…a South Korean military coup…the Yemen War…the Iraqi Kurdish Revolt, brutally crushed by the Iraqi Army, etc. etc. The beat goes on and on…Several more impotent, powerless, and ineffective UN Secretaries were elected until…

The “War on Terror” began. A Saudi exile (Osama bin Laden) had masterminded the 9-11 terrorist attacks in the United States. Bin Laden hid out in Afghanistan where he was supported by the brutal Taliban regime.

Suddenly, a new kid was on the block…Secretary General Kofi Annan who was born in Ghana…another third world nation. Again, the UN had demonstrated its unwillingness or inability to elect to its top post any seasoned diplomat from a major industrial state. And once again, during our second war against Iraq, Kofi Annan and the UN demonstrated to the world their absolute inability and impotence to wield real power in enforcing UN resolutions. If the UN had enforced the previous UN resolutions, there would not have been another war in Iraq! Did you hear what I said? If the UN had enforced the previous UN resolutions, there would not have been another war in Iraq! We would not be there now! Think about that for a minute or two!

The UN resolution on Iraq says, in paragraphs 3 and 4 that the UN “...Decides that, in order to begin to comply with its disarmament obligations, in addition to submitting the required biannual declarations, the Government of Iraq shall provide to the Council, not later than 30 days from the date of this resolution, a currently accurate, full, and complete declaration of all aspects of its programs to develop chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and other delivery systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles and dispersal systems designed for use on aircraft, including any holdings and precise locations of such weapons, components, sub-components, stocks of agents, and related material and equipment, the locations and work of its research, development and production facilities, as well as all other chemical, biological, and nuclear programs, including any which it claims are for purposes not related to weapon production or material.”

Paragraphs 11 and 12 says, “Directs the Executive Chairman of UNMOVIC and the Director General of the IAEA to report immediately to the Council any interference by Iraq with inspection activities, as well as any failure by Iraq to comply with its disarmament obligations, including its obligations regarding inspections under this resolution”. And the beat goes on…The UN did nothing!

Time and time again, the media reported that Iraq was in “material breach” of resolution 1441. Yet, the UN took no action. They pretended that the documents submitted by Iraq (which were admittedly a rehash of those submitted eleven years earlier) were taken seriously, while only whispering and assuming the posture of a paper tiger…sending out empty threats… empty words of oratory rhetoric. They failed once again to act. They completely ignored serious threats of attacks. However, they did what they do best… They observed!

Let me ask you something? If your child was on a street corner and I was a policeman in charge of maintaining and enforcing the law…and your child was being savagely beaten and abused in my area…and I did nothing, what would be your opinion of me? Of course I observed. I saw what was happening with my own eyes, yet I did nothing. You would want to hang me by my toes, wouldn’t you? And you should…if I were guilty of such a dastardly deed!

Continuing with Resolution 1441…The words of Resolution 1441 are virtually embarrassing…for they document the failure of the UN to force Iraq into complying with an overabundance supply of useless resolutions. “Recognizing the threat of Iraq's noncompliance with Council resolutions and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles poses to international peace and security…”

“Further recalling that its resolution 687 (1991) imposed obligations on Iraq as a necessary step for achievement of its stated objective of restoring international peace and security in the area…Deploring the fact that Iraq has not provided an accurate, full, final, and complete disclosure, as required by resolution 687 (1991) of all aspects of its programs to develop weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles with a range greater than one hundred and fifty kilometers, and of all holdings of such weapons, their components and production facilities and locations, as well as all other nuclear programs…” And the beat goes on…Their actions were as impotent as a red ant’s motorcycle driving around a BB. Do you get my drift?

Iraq never complied with the resolution…any more than it did the previous ones.

Saddam Hussein did speak the truth once in his life. He said, “The United Nations, just like the League of Nations, is superfluous and irrelevant…it belongs in the dustbin of history.” (MORE TO FOLLOW IN PART 2)
